Hearing the Voice of God

“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”

John 10:27 NLT

Any success and growth I’ve experienced have been a direct result of daily prayer and obedience to God’s direction. These habits influence every personal, family, and business decision I make. As I’ve grown in these steps, God has taken me on a journey that I could never have expected.

Of course, I’m still learning to follow and obey our loving Father. However, hearing God’s voice has helped me follow His leading, grow in a deeper connection with Him, and have more confidence in my relationship with the Lord.

Because prayer and hearing God’s voice have been so life-changing for me, I want to help others practice prayer in their daily lives. Following Christ is simply about obeying Him, loving Him, and loving others. As you grow in your relationship with God, you will naturally grow in each of these areas.

If you’re already doing something similar, great! If you’re interested in incorporating this concept into your own life but don’t know how to begin, I hope this can encourage you.

I do these simple steps almost every morning. This isn’t an exhaustive list, and it isn’t the only way to hear from God. But this is what’s worked for me. I do my best to listen to and pray in agreement with the Holy Spirit. Be confident that God will speak as you seek Him for vision, direction, and encouragement.

First, I pray in the Spirit.

I take time to let the Spirit of God pray and intercede through me. I believe God can and will reveal His voice, heart, and vision as we worship Him and take time to hear what He has to say.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Ephesians 6:18 NLT

Next, I write it down.

After I ask God to reveal what He wants to say, I write down what I feel God is putting in my heart. This is a very important step. It not only reinforces what I hear and burns it into my memory, but it also serves as a journal of sorts. It’s a record of God’s plan for me that I can return to time and time again.

I’ve been encouraged as I hear God speak, write it down, and see the visions He’s shown come to pass. This process is incredibly faith-building! God shows up in more incredible ways than I could ever imagine.

Maybe it’s a scripture, a picture, an encouragement, or a specific action step He has for me. The key here is not to doubt or judge it. Just write down what you sense He’s saying to you.

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.

Philippians 1:9 NLT

Finally, I align with Scripture.

I make sure what I wrote down, testing and confirming each line, aligns with the Word and character of God. The more you practice, the more you will see that what you wrote down aligns with Scripture.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

Once you follow these steps and know God spoke to you, receive His message, and pray in agreement with it, your life will change. Stand on His truth, and later when you are tempted to doubt what God said, go back to what you wrote down. Know God was speaking and simply walk it out in obedience. Share with others what God is telling and revealing to you. There is power in agreeing with others as you pray in faith together.

What is one action you can take to hear the voice of God more frequently?
